COOL TIPS: Say it DIFFERENTLY!!!

Hey guys!!! One thing I always tell my students is that some words are too basic for them. Sometimes, especially using adjectives, we get stuck in the basic words such as big, small, beautiful, good, bad... instead of that, try to use some words that are more beautiful and add a nice touch to your way of speaking!!! Take a look at this list and make great use of it!!!

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: GOING TO x WILL???

Hello guys!!! Today I'm going to write about something a dear reader asked me to and that is a very common confusion for ESL students: the uses of FUTURE forms. 

Olá pessoal!!! Hoje vou escrever sobre uma coisa que uma leitora querida me pediu e que é uma confusão muito comum entre os estudantes de inglês como segunda língua: os usos das formas do FUTURO.

The question is... when do we use WILL and when do we use GOING TO??? Do you know??? Pay attention to the sentences below to see if you can identify the differences between them:

A questão é... quando usamos WILL e quando usamos GOING TO??? Você sabe??? Preste atenção nas frases abaixo para ver se você consegue identificar as diferenças entre eles:

It's going to rain today!

Vai chover hoje!

Maybe she will accept your offer.

Talvez ela aceite a sua oferta.

I'm going to buy veggies in the street market.

Vou comprar legumes na feira.

Your bags look heavy! I'll help you to carry them.

Suas sacolas parecem pesadas! Vou ajudar você a carregá-las.

So.... Can you tell me why I used each one??? Let's take a look thoroughly:

It's going to rain today!

The use of GOING TO here occurs because it's about something you are pretty sure to happen.
O uso de GOING TO aqui ocorre porque é sobre uma coisa que você tem bastante certeza que vai acontecer.

 Maybe she will accept your offer.

Now, the use of WILL shows that you're not so sure and it's a probability.
Agora, o uso de WILL mostra que você não tem muita certeza e é uma probabilidade.

I'm going to buy veggies in the street market.

The use of GOING TO in this sentence shows a plan you have, something you decided before.
O uso de GOING TO nesta frase mostra um plano que você tem, algo que você decidiu antes.

Your bags look heavy! I'll help you to carry them.

And here I just decided to help you at that moment, it was not my plan, so we should make use of WILL.
E aqui eu acabei de decidir ajudar você naquele momento, não era meu plano, então devemos usar WILL.

And don't forget, there's another use of the future... when we have something scheduled, arranged, we use the PRESENT CONTINUOUS (to be + -ING), check it out:

E não se esqueça, tem outro uso do futuro... quando você tem algo agendado, programado, usamos o PRESENTE CONTÍNUO (to be + -ING), dê uma olhada:

I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow. (you have an appointment)

Eu vou ao médico amanhã. (você tem uma hora marcada)

What are you doing tonight? (I want to know what you have planned for tonight)

O que você vai fazer hoje à noite? (eu quero saber o que você planejou para esta noite)

Last comment related to this is that when we're talking, instead of  GOING TO, it's very common to hear GONNA, which is the short form:

Último comentário relacionado a isso é que quando estamos falando, em vez de  GOING TO, é muito comum ouvir GONNA, que é a forma curta:

I'm GOING TO buy new shoes for the party.
Vou comprar sapatos novos para a festa.

I'm GONNA buy new shoes for the party.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Stop SMOKING or Stop TO SMOKE???

This grammar issue is very common, if I have already taught English to you, you probably know what I'm talking about!!! Many times, English students don't realize the difference here and use one instead of the other. So what is the difference between stop SMOKING and stop TO SMOKE???

Esta questão gramatical é muito comum, se eu já dei aula de inglês para você, provavelmente você sabe do que eu estou falando!!! Muitas vezes, os alunos de inglês não percebem a diferença aqui e usam um no lugar no outro. Então qual é a diferença entre stop SMOKING e stop TO SMOKE??? 

Both exist, that's a fact, but each one is used for one different meaning:

Ambos existem, isso é fato, mas cada um é usado para um significado diferente:

I stopped SMOKING means I no longer smoke, I had this bad habit but I gave up doing it.

Eu parei DE FUMAR significa que eu não fumo mais, eu tinha esse costume ruim mas parei de fazer isso.

I stopped TO SMOKE means I was doing something else, as walking on the street, and then, after that, I stopped somewhere and started smoking.

Eu parei PARA FUMAR significa que eu estava fazendo alguma outra coisa, como andando na rua, e então, depois disso, eu parei em algum lugar e comecei a fumar.  

See how different they are??? If you don't know this little rule, you may pass the wrong message and you don't want that, right?

Viu como são diferentes??? Se você não conhece essa regra, você pode passar a mensagem errada e você não quer isso, né?

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Important TO me or FOR me???

Good morning guys!!! Another challenge with differences!!! Do you know this one???

Bom dia pessoal!!! Outro desafio com diferenças!!! Você sabe este aqui???

This is a common confusion I've seen in the speech of most students and candidates when I interview them... should we say "It's important TO me" or "It's important FOR me"???

Esta é uma confusão comum que tenho visto no discurso da maioria dos alunos e candidatos quando os entrevisto... devemos dizer "It's important TO me" ou "It's important FOR me"???

It depends!!! And we have to remember that in Portuguese the translation is a single word, PARA.

Depende!!! E temos que nos lembrarmos que em português a tradução é uma única palavra, PARA.

If it's a personal feeling, showing what you want, your own opinion, you should use "It's important TO me".

Se for um sentimento pessoal, mostrando o que você quer, sua própria opinião, você deve usar "It's important TO me".

But, if the context is about what society expects or something seen from the eyes of the others, then you should use "It's important FOR me".

Mas, se o contexto for sobre o que a sociedade espera ou algo visto pelos olhos dos outros, então você deve usar "It's important FOR me".

Let's check some examples to make it clear:

Vamos ver alguns exemplos para deixar claro:

I'm a movie star so keeping fit is important TO me.

Sou uma estrela do cinema, então ficar em forma é importante para mim.

My mom says that eating vegetables is important FOR me.

Minha mãe diz que comer legumes é importante para mim.

I drink a lot of water because I think it's important TO me.

Bebo muita água porque acho que é importante para mim.

My boss believes that looking good at work is important FOR me.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Think ABOUT... or OF...???

Many times we are reading a text, watching a sitcom on TV or simply talking to someone in English and there they are: sometimes we hear "I'm thinking ABOUT..." and sometimes we hear "I'm thinking OF...", but which one is correct???

Muitas vezes estamos lendo um texto, assistindo a um seriado na TV ou simplesmente falando com alguém em inglês e lá estão eles: às vezes ouvimos "I'm thinking ABOUT..." e às vezes ouvimos "I'm thinking OF...", mas qual é correto?

If you said BOTH you are right!!! That's why we hear them both all the time, because one and the other are correct.

Se você disse AMBOS você está certo!!! É por isso que ouvimos os dois o tempo todo, porque um e outro são corretos.

However, we have to pay attention when to use each one, because there's a little difference between them. Do you know what the difference is???

Entretanto, temos que prestar atenção quando usar cada um, porque há uma pequena diferença entre eles. Você sabe qual é a diferença???

When you think ABOUT something, you consider it, you concentrate your mind on it, for example:

Quando você think ABOUT algo, você leva isso em consideração, você concentra sua mente nisso, por exemplo:

Are you concerned? What are you thinking ABOUT???

Você está preocupada? No que você está pensando???

This dress is so pricey! I don't know if I should buy it, I'll have to think ABOUT it.

Este vestido é muito caro! Não sei se devo comprá-lo, vou ter que pensar.

Let's go on a trip to the mountains!!! I know you don't like cold temperatures, but think ABOUT it!

Vamos fazer uma viagem para as montanhas!!! Eu sei que você não gosta de temperaturas frias, mas pense nisso!

On the other hand, when you think OF something, the idea comes to your mind, it's not so elaborated. And also we use think OF when we ask or give an opinion. Check the examples: 

Por outro lado, quando você think OF algo, a ideia vem na sua mente, não é tão elaborada. E também usamos think OF quando pedimos ou damos uma opinião. Veja os exemplos:

I can't think OF a good answer for her question.

Não consigo pensar em uma boa resposta para a pergunta dela.

Joan is always so creative! Nobody can think OF the things she comes up with.

Joan é sempre tão criativa! Ninguém consegue pensar nas coisas que ela inventa.

What do you think OF my new haircut?

O que você acha do meu novo corte de cabelo?

But in some cases, when the difference is so small, you can use one or the other, like in:
Mas em alguns casos, quando a diferença é tão pequena, você pode usar um ou outro, como em:

I'm thinking OF you!

Estou pensando em você! 

or/ou 

I'm thinking ABOUT you!

Estou pensando em você!
