SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: What's wrong???

Hey guys, a little challenge for you: what's wrong in the sentence below???

It's funny that MANY times we come across some mistakes especially in these kinds of pictures + saying.

If you said TO FAR is wrong, you're RIGHT!!! Here, TOO should be written with double O and it means more than enough, excessively, not only the preposition TO. In other cases it can mean "also", "as well".

Aqui, TOO deve ser escrito com dois Os e significa mais que suficiente, excessivamente, não apenas a preposição TO. Em outros casos pode significar "também".

If you have any questions or suggestions, let me know!!! =)
Se vocês tiverem qualquer pergunta ou sugestão, me contem!!! =)

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Thanks God or Thank God???

Good morning, guys!!! Today I'm bringing up a question many students have, I experience this all the time during my classes or when I see people (whose 1st language is not English) writing on social medias and they are not so sure about the use of this so common expression... is it THANKS GOD or THANK GOD???
Bom dia, pessoal!!!

If you chose THANK GOD, you're right!!!

Se você escolheu THANK GOD, você acertou!!!

Let me explain to you the reason why we should say THANK GOD. This expression comes from a shortened version of another one, "Thanks be to God", in which you tell the others how thankful you are to God. Another reason is that it's a verb, so we say "(I/we) Thank God".
Graças a Deus sou mulher
Graças a Deus é sexta-feira!

When it comes to the use of THANKS, we have to take into account the use in a prayer, for example, when you are talking directly to God, so you could say "Thanks, God".

Clear, guys??? Hope so!!! Any other questions you have you can write to me and I can make it clear for you!!! =)

Ficou claro, pessoal??? =)

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Use x Wear

In the previous post, Demi Lovato's song, she said something that can sound a little strange for many people... WEAR perfume. But why isn't it USE perfume??? Do you know when to use each of these words that mean the same in Portuguese (usar)???

So pay attention:
Então preste atenção:

USE
to put into service or apply for a purpose, so things in general

WEAR
to carry or have on the person as covering, adornment or protection, part of your appearance

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: When to use MAKE and DO

Goooood morning!!!! I'm very happy today!!! I love waking up early, especially when I have time to stop by the bakery and get some fresh chocolate croissant... hmmmm!!! So good!!!
Bommmm dia!!!!

Guys, take a look, we have here something that is quite confusing for many learners of English: when we use MAKE and DO. In Portuguese it's even worse because both words have the same basic translation which is "FAZER". Depending on the collocation, it changes a little, for example, MAKE A MISTAKE is not translated by "FAZER um erro" but "COMETER um erro". Anyway, it's good to have in mind a general rule:

MAKE
related to the preparation of something
relacionado com a preparação de algo

DO
related to an activity
relacionado com uma atividade

For example, if I MAKE an English exercise, it means I prepared, I wrote the exercise to my students; and if I DO an English exercise, the exercise is ready and I'm testing myself, practicing English with that exercise.

Remember that some uses of MAKE and DO are strictly that way, that is, they are collocations and should be known by heart.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: The "WRITE" Way... 8 commonly misused words

Guys, I found this chart on the internet and found so useful because it's sooooo true!!! So many times students of English get confused with some similar words... for example, in the tittle, we should use the word "RIGHT" which means "correct", not "WRITE" which means "communicate in writing".
Take a look at the most commonly confused words and make sure you can identify both and don't make the same mistakes!!! (click on the picture to zoom in or download the pic)

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: British x American English

Guys! Today I'm showing you the differences between American and British English that can be applied every time you have a word with the same model as the ones in the chart. For example in British English we always add the "u" in "or" endings such as "neighbor" x "neighbour", even though the pronunciation is basically the same. Check the other and don't forget that!!!
Pessoal!

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: GOING TO x WILL???

Hello guys!!! Today I'm going to write about something a dear reader asked me to and that is a very common confusion for ESL students: the uses of FUTURE forms.

The question is... when do we use WILL and when do we use GOING TO??? Do you know??? Pay attention to the sentences below to see if you can identify the differences between them:
A questão é... quando usamos WILL e quando usamos GOING TO???

It's going to rain today!
Vai chover hoje!

Maybe she will accept your offer.

Talvez ela aceite a sua oferta.

I'm going to buy veggies in the street market.
Vou comprar legumes na feira.

Your bags look heavy! I'll help you to carry them.
Suas sacolas parecem pesadas! Vou ajudar você a carregá-las.

So.... Can you tell me why I used each one??? Let's take a look thoroughly:
Vamos olhar detalhadamente:

It's going to rain today!
The use of GOING TO here occurs because it's about something you are pretty sure to happen.

Maybe she will accept your offer.
Now, the use of WILL shows that you're not so sure and it's a probability.

I'm going to buy veggies in the street market.
The use of GOING TO in this sentence shows a plan you have, something you decided before.

Your bags look heavy! I'll help you to carry them.
And here I just decided to help you at that moment, it was not my plan, so we should make use of WILL.

And don't forget, there's another use of the future... when we have something scheduled, arranged, we use the PRESENT CONTINUOUS (to be + -ING), check it out:
E não se esqueça, tem outro uso do futuro... quando você tem algo agendado, programado, usamos o PRESENTE CONTÍNUO (to be + -ING), dê uma olhada:

I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow. (you have an appointment)
Eu vou ao médico amanhã. (você tem uma hora marcada)

What are you doing tonight? (I want to know what you have planned for tonight)

Last comment related to this is that when we're talking, instead of  GOING TO, it's very common to hear GONNA, which is the short form:

I'm GOING TO buy new shoes for the party.
Vou comprar sapatos novos para a festa.
=
I'm GONNA buy new shoes for the party.
Vou comprar sapatos novos para a festa.

Is it clear??? So now you really know when to use each one of the future forms!!! =) And if you have any questions, anything you don't understand very well and want an explanation, let me know and I can write about it here on the blog!!!

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Stop SMOKING or Stop TO SMOKE???

This grammar issue is very common, if I have already taught English to you, you probably know what I'm talking about!!! Many times, English students don't realize the difference here and use one instead of the other. So what is the difference between stop SMOKING and stop TO SMOKE???
Então qual é a diferença entre stop SMOKING e stop TO SMOKE???

Both exist, that's a fact, but each one is used for one different meaning:

I stopped SMOKING means I no longer smoke, I had this bad habit but I gave up doing it.

I stopped TO SMOKE means I was doing something else, as walking on the street, and then, after that, I stopped somewhere and started smoking.

See how different they are??? If you don't know this little rule, you may pass the wrong message and you don't want that, right?

Check some other examples:

Veja alguns outros exemplos:

I need to tell my friend to stop EATING so much, she's getting so chubby!!!

He always stops TO DRINK water when he's running in the park.

My boss needs to stop WORKING so late every day, he's so stressed out.

Julie was going to the movies at the mall but she stopped TO BUY Christmas' gifts at her favorite store.

Did you know that one??? Don't forget to pay attention to this rule from now on!!!

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: Important TO me or FOR me???

Good morning guys!!! Another challenge with differences!!! Do you know this one???
Bom dia pessoal!!! Outro desafio com diferenças!!! Você sabe este aqui???

This is a common confusion I've seen in the speech of most students and candidates when I interview them... should we say "It's important TO me" or "It's important FOR me"???
Esta é uma confusão comum que tenho visto no discurso da maioria dos alunos e candidatos quando os entrevisto... devemos dizer "It's important TO me" ou "It's important FOR me"???

It depends!!! And we have to remember that in Portuguese the translation is a single word, PARA.

Depende!!!

If it's a personal feeling, showing what you want, your own opinion, you should use "It's important TO me".
Se for um sentimento pessoal, mostrando o que você quer, sua própria opinião, você deve usar "It's important TO me".

But, if the context is about what society expects or something seen from the eyes of the others, then you should use "It's important FOR me".
It's important FOR me".

Let's check some examples to make it clear:
Vamos ver alguns exemplos para deixar claro:

I'm a movie star so keeping fit is important TO me.

My mom says that eating vegetables is important FOR me.

I drink a lot of water because I think it's important TO me.

My boss believes that looking good at work is important FOR me.

Have you spotted the difference??? Put it in use now!!!
Encontrou a diferença??? Coloque-a em uso agora!!!
