COOL TIPS: A compliment...

Garçom, tem uma mosca na minha salada. Você poderia elogiar o chef por mim?
Hey guys!!! I loved when I read this comic strip about the fly in the salad, but do you understand the meaning of COMPLIMENT???

This is a tricky word I always use by interviewing trainees and interns to check their English for different kinds of jobs. What happens 80% of the times I use this word in a question is that it is misunderstood, they think it means ACCOMPLISHMENT and start talking about the good things they have done so far.

Actually, what I want to know with that is a positive feedback, a praise, flattery, something related to being encouraged by others for something you have done, not just doing something good and period.

COOL TIPS: What to Avoid in a Job Interview

I was reading some articles and found something interesting to put here on the blog. As some of you may know, besides being a private teacher, translator, interpreter, proofreader, I also carry out oral evaluations to test a person's English skills so that he/she can work at a company. I always interview very interesting people for very interesting companies, and you end up paying attention to some other things related to a job interview. On this website, there are 25 things to avoid in a job interview, so I picked the 10 most important ones to help you in case you have to go through this process. Hope you find it useful as I do!!! =)

1. Poor personal appearance
1. Aparência pessoal ruim

Usually the best bet is wear a business suit, but this is not a rule, according to the company you are applying to you can choose other type of clothing, anyway, if you do not use a suit you can use elegant sport clothing. Take special care of your personal appearance; remember the first impression is important.

2. Say too much or say too few
2. Falar demais ou muito pouco
During a job interview, try to answer with the necessary words, go to the point and do not divagate through other subjects, also avoid using yes/no answers, listen carefully to the interviewer and if you have doubts about the question then ask, remember everything you say will be taken into account to give you the job or not.

3. Show up unprepared
3. Aparecer despreparado
If you do not take a while to analyze your skills, strengths, the company, what you want, what you expect, and so on, you may find yourself on an uncomfortable situation during your interview.

4. Showing up late
4. Aparecer atrasado
Take precautions to avoid being late, choose your clothing the night before, if you can, go to the location where the interview is going to be performed, that way you will know for sure the address, if some unexpected thing happens like an emergency, call ahead.

5. Criticism of past employers
5. Criticar empregadores antigos
Never criticize your last employer(s), the interviewer probably will call them to be sure about your references, so avoid doing that, even if the interviewer seems to be a really comprehensive person.

6. Lying
6. Mentir
Be respectful and honest with your interviewer(s), it won't be hard for them to realize if you are lying or not, and in case you get hired, it will probably be the reason for you being fired.

7. Poor eye contact with interviewer
7. Contato visual ruim com o entrevistador
During an interview, make sure you make eye contact with each interviewer, you are talking to human(s), so look politely to their eyes while you answer.

8. Talk too much
8. Falar demais
Interviews are a two way conversation so be careful to not talk too much, listen carefully, think what you are going to say and answer the questions properly covering all the subjects it involves.

9. Use too much technical words or jargon
9. Usar palavras técnicas demais ou jargões
During an interview, if you and the interviewer can understand technical language then use it, nevertheless, probably it will be the first time you talk to him/her, so the best is use simple words avoiding jargon.

10. Listen what it means, not what is said 10.
It is important to listen carefully the questions regardless the meaning you can think they have, focus on the question and answer it.

COOL TIPS: Country names

So yesterday I was doing an interpreting job in the booth and everything related to the subject was on the tip of my tongue after studying about it. However, this guy came up with a question to the speaker and he mentioned a country in Portuguese that I almost couldn't remember, Chipre, but luckily (and I actually don't know how so many words we don't use very often pop up from our brain) I said Cyprus [check the pronunciation here clicking on the flag]. Did you know that??? So, I made a list with the countries that get more different when speaking English to help you - and myself - to remember them when it's time to use them! Take a look:

COOL TIPS: List of English Acronyms

So you're reading something in English and suddenly you see some of the little letters below...

Don't freak out if you don't understand right away, but these are acronyms and they are being used more and more in writing, especially online! Many of them are very popular even to a foreign language, for example, many people use the most famous acrononym ASAP and some of them even pronounce it like in Portuguese... yes!!! But the way Americans say them is reading letter by letter in English of course, don't forget so you are not put to blush!!! =)

Oh, and many times when I'm translating a document lots of acronyms come up on my way and I use the website Acronym Finder to make sure I know their meaning.

Now let's see a list of acronyms to help you to identify them when the come up on your way too.

COOL TIPS: 7 Eating tricks from slim women

OMG... first of all, I've been so busy interviewing so many people for some trainee programs that I didn't have time to write here yesterday nor earlier today... and then, this weekend is gone and I feel so fat after eating twice in Italian restaurants on the same day!!! Yes, I'm a fat little woman, but it was Sunday... =D... well, anyway, after something like that, many of us think of how to lose all the weight we put on during these lazy days... So I was reading this post on FabFitFun and found interesting to share some parts of it with you and maybe we can learn these tricks to keep fit and control ourselves just like slim women. Check it out:

1. Eat Your Darn Breakfast:
1. Tome seu Café da Manhã Direito:
It may seem like a no-brainer that eating breakfast first thing in the morning is vital to good overall health, yet so many women still choose to forgo the meal. The calories digested in the morning are key to developing and maintaining a slim figure as they rev your metabolism and kick your body into gear for the day.

2. 20-Minute Rule:

2. Regra de 20 Minutos:
20/20 doesn’t just apply to eyesight any more, it’s part of the slim vision also. Take 20 minutes to eat a meal and 20 minutes to digest it. Do what you need to do, whether it be to chew super slowly, put the fork down between each bite, or even tell yourself out loud to slow down (maybe quietly if you’re in public?). Then, before you reach for a second helping or that tempting dessert, wait 20 more minutes and you might find you are pleasantly satisfied.

3. Snack Savvy:

3. Sabedoria do Lanchinho:
You start your day eating so well and feeling just fab about yourself, but then out of nowhere you become super “hangry” (angry out of hunger) and suddenly hate the world. Sound familiar? (Please tell us we’re not the only ones!) Well, if you snack continuously and in moderation on high protein munchies like almonds or hard-boiled eggs, it will prevent a “hangry” binge on unhealthy options later in the day!

4. Number No-Nos:

4. Enumere os Nãos:
While you should be aware of what you put into your mouth, try not to obsess over the number of calories in each bite. Doing so will lead to a feeling of unhealthy guilt or warrant an unhealthy obsession, neither of which aid in weight loss. Instead, focus on whether what you are putting into your body makes you feel good and gives you the proper nutrition and energy needed to get through your day. Not all 300 cals are created equal (sigh).

5. Cook Yourself Skinny:

5. Cozinhe Coisas Magras para Você Mesma:
Although we wish we could be as talented as Giada in the kitchen, it just ain’t happenin’ – but that doesn’t mean we can’t try! It feels like every day there is a new reason not to make a home-cooked meal (hello Lean Cuisine!), but the more you channel Rachael Ray and cook something simple, healthy, and unprocessed you’ll save yourself time (leftovers!), money, and calories!

6. Pass the Protein:

6. Coma Proteína:
We’ve drilled this tip into the ground, but it has to be said again: eat your protein! It will keep you feeling full longer and is essential to toning up and whittling your waist. So combine complex carbs like fruits and veggies with protein, for example strawberries with Greek yogurt or avocados with a whole-wheat tortilla, before the “hangry” girl rears her ugly head!

7. Just Say No:

7. Apenas Diga Não:
Next time someone at work offers you a brownie, politely refuse by saying, “I don’t eat brownies, thank you” instead of whining that you “can’t” eat them. A new study from the University of Houston found that dieters were able to resist temptation more easily if they said “I don’t” rather than “I can’t” because the latter implies deprivation while the former signals determination!

Liked these tricks??? Some I already do and others I'll try to add in my routine, for sure!!! =) What about you???

Gostou desses truques???

COOL TIPS: Buying tickets abroad

When I plan a trip abroad, one of the things I always check is about the events going on there, especially concerts, which are so expensive and crowded in Brazil.

Here, when we have a very good concert, mainly international ones, it's probably in one of the huge pavilions for thousands of people, not exclusive at all: big stadiums, people sleep in tents to be able to stay up in the front of the stage, tickets are sold out at the same day they start selling them, you pay far too much for that, you're at risk of having your cell phone stolen during the concert in the middle of the crowd and you don't even see your favorite artist well. These are just some of the disadvantages we go through in concerts in Brazil.

In the US, on the other hand, you can enjoy the concert which is most of the times with a marked seat, even in big ones in stadiums, you get to see the artist pretty close and you pay a fair amount of money for that, nothing overpriced.

There, besides the official sellers, you find "scalpers" selling tickets not only outside the venue but also in websites, which is much more comfortable for those looking for last minute tickets... and many times you're lucky enough to find tickets that are cheaper there than in the official website, just like I did once paying only US$ 20 for a front row seat at Nelly Furtado's concert.

When I lived in the US, I went to all the big concerts in the region: Mariah Carey, Norah Jones, Eric Clapton, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ben Harper, Rihanna, Akon, Fergie, and MADONNA!!! Yes... for that last one I spent the most, but not even half of what people pay to stay in the middle of the crowd, and there, I was face to face with the POP diva!!!

So, don't hesitate about looking for tickets when you go abroad and these websites also sell tickets for musicals and sports events, which are so cool abroad... basketball, hockey and football are the most popular ones and a great American flavor for visitors!!!

Here is a short list of websites that can be useful to you:
