SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: What's wrong???

Hey guys, a little challenge for you: what's wrong in the sentence below???

Olá pessoal, um pequeno desafio para vocês: o que está errado na frase abaixo???

It's funny that MANY times we come across some mistakes especially in these kinds of pictures + saying.

É engraçado que MUITAS vezes cruzamos com alguns erros especialmente nesses tipos de foto + dizeres.

If you said TO FAR is wrong, you're RIGHT!!! Here, TOO should be written with double O and it means more than enough, excessively, not only the preposition TO. In other cases it can mean "also", "as well".

Se você disse TO FAR está errado, você está CERTO!!! Aqui, TOO deve ser escrito com dois Os e significa mais que suficiente, excessivamente, não apenas a preposição TO. Em outros casos pode significar "também".

EXPRESSION OF THE DAY: What's Catchball???

Yesterday, a student of mine asked a question: What's the meaning of CATCHBALL??? He said that during a meeting in English, people were saying this all the time.

Ontem, um aluno meu fez uma pergunta: Qual é o significado de CATCHBALL??? Ele disse que durante a reunião em inglês, as pessoas estavam dizendo isso o tempo todo.


This word is related to sports, especially Baseball, in which a person catches the ball that is thrown. But in a figurative scenario, looking for a better definition in the business word I found in the Business Dictionary a great explanation:
Essa palavra está relacionada com esportes, especialmente Beisebol, em que a pessoa pega a bola que é jogada. Mas em um cenário figurado, procurando melhor por uma definição no mundo dos negócios, encontrei uma ótima explicação no Business Dictionary:

"Participative approach to decision-making in which information and ideas are thrown and caught back and forth, up and down throughout the organization."
"Abordagem participativa na tomada de decisões em que as informações e ideias são lançadas e pegas para frente e para trás, para cima e para baixo, por toda a organização".

So using a CATCHBALL in your meetings or simply within the company allows people to share their ideas, thoughts, expectations regarding processes and improvements in a project or anything else related to the company.

Assim, usar CATCHBALL em suas reuniões ou simplesmente dentro da empresa permite que as pessoas compartilhem ideias, pensamentos, expectativas em relação aos processos e melhorias de um projeto ou qualquer coisa relacionada com a empresa.

OHHHH MYYYYY GOOOOOOD!!!! How long it's been since the last time I wrote here... and I missed so much having time to write on the blog, but one thing led to the other, and I saw myself helpless, with no time at all to be here writing to you all. Work, events, translations, students, sickness, short vacay, post-graduation papers, projects.... yes, I've been so busy but now I'm back even more energized and ready to write our weekly tips on English.

MEUUUUU DEUSSSSS!!! Quanto tempo faz desde a última vez que escrevi aqui... e senti muita falta de ter tempo para escrever no blog, mas uma coisa levou à outra e me vi sem ter o que fazer, sem tempo mesmo de ficar aqui escrevendo para vocês. Trabalho, eventos, traduções, alunos, doença, férias curtas, trabalhos da pós, projetos... sim, estive muito ocupada mas agora estou de volta mais energizada ainda e pronta para escrever nossas dicas semanais de inglês.

To kick off, I chose to post the most exciting song just released by Katy Perry, Roar! I loved her outdoor performance at the VMA earlier this week in a boxing ring - by the way, Miley Cyrus should learn with big stars such as Katy to perform on stage (WHAT THE HELL WAS MILEY THINKING OF??? - if you haven't seen her performance, you can feel sorry for her checking this link - I refuse to post it on my blog).

Para começar, escolhi postar a música mais animadora que acabou de ser lançada pela Katy Perry, Roar! Amei a performance ao ar livre dela no VMA no começo da semana em um ringue de boxe - falando nisso, a Miley Cyrus deveria aprender com as grandes estrelas como a Katy a fazer uma performance no palco (EM QUE DIABOS A MILEY ESTAVA PENSANDO??? - se você não viu essa performance, você pode sentir pena dela vendo este link - eu me recuso a postar aqui no meu blog).

Hey guys!!! I loved when I read this comic strip about the fly in the salad, but do you understand the meaning of COMPLIMENT???

Olá pessoal!!! Adorei quando li esse quadrinho sobre a mosca na salada, mas vocês entendem o significado de COMPLIMENT???

This is a tricky word I always use by interviewing trainees and interns to check their English for different kinds of jobs. What happens 80% of the times I use this word in a question is that it is misunderstood, they think it means ACCOMPLISHMENT and start talking about the good things they have done so far.

Essa é uma palavra complicada que sempre uso quando entrevisto trainees e estagiários para verificar o inglês para diferentes tipos de empregos. O que acontece 80% das vezes que uso essa palavra em uma pergunta é que ela é mal interpretada, eles acham que significa ACCOMPLISHMENT (conquista) e começam a falar sobre as coisas boas que fizeram até agora.

Actually, what I want to know with that is a positive feedback, a praise, flattery, something related to being encouraged by others for something you have done, not just doing something good and period.

Na verdade, o que quero saber com isso é um feedback positivo, um elogio, uma lisonja, algo relacionado com ser incentivado pelos outros por algo que você fez, não apenas fazer algo bom e ponto final.

Falando nisso, vocês já ouviram falar da expressão WORK HARD, PLAY HARD???

This expression is associated with the fact that on one hand you work very hard during the week, and on the other hand, when the weekend comes, you can play hard and balance the effort put into your work to be able to party, enjoy and relax too. Some people even use it as "play harder"!

Essa expressão está associada com o fato de que por um lado você trabalha muito mesmo durante a semana, e por outro lado, quando chega o fim de semana, você pode curtir muito e equilibrar o esforço colocado no trabalho para poder badalar, curtir e relaxar também. Algumas pessoas até mesmo usam essa expressão como "curtir mais ainda"!

Brazil is going through some protests to fight corruption and all the other things its people can't stand anymore. If you access social medias, you can only see things related to this movement that has awaken the "giant" as people say here. So, reading the domestic and international news, I chose a short list of recurrent vocabulary so that if you want to talk about this, you can remember the proper words in both languages. #changebrazil

O Brasil está passando por alguns protestos para lutar contra a corrupção e todas as outras coisas que seu povo não aguenta mais. Se você acessa as mídias sociais, só vê coisas relacionadas com esse movimento que acordou o "gigante" como as pessoas dizem aqui. COOL TIPS: Vocabulary - The Hangover Part III

Good morning, guys!!! Last weekend I went to the movies to see The Hangover Part III. I love this movie sequence and was looking forward to seeing the gran finale!!! So when I was watching the movie it occurred to me that I could help you out picking up some new vocabulary or just paying attention to some interesting words and expressions said during the movie, because one of the things that I do when I'm watching a TV series or anything in another language is trying to back away from the subtitles, to force myself to get exactly what they are saying. But I know that our brain starts getting tired at some point and then we relax and read... it's natural, because when we're relaxing our brain thinks in lazy mode, it wants the easiest way of thinking, so reading the subtitles.

Bom dia, pessoal!!! Fim de semana passado, fui ao cinema para ver Se Beber Não Case III. Eu amo essa sequência de filmes e estava ansiosa para ver o gran finale!!! Então, quando estava assistindo ao filme, pensei que poderia ajudar vocês a aprender vocabulário novo ou apenas prestar atenção em algumas palavras e expressões interessantes ditas durante o filme, porque uma das coisas que faço quando estou assistindo a uma série de TV ou qualquer coisa em outro idioma é tentar me distanciar das legendas, me forçar a entender exatamente o que eles estão dizendo. Mas sei que nosso cérebro começa a ficar cansado em um dado momento e então relaxamos e lemos... é natural, porque quando estamos relaxando nosso cérebro pensa em modo preguiçoso, ele quer a forma mais fácil de pensar, lendo assim as legendas.

That's why just watching things in English is not enough to learn. We have to identify and try to put into use what we see and hear in these programs. So, I selected some expressions from the movie and the first part of the exercise is trying to identify their meaning.

É por isso que apenas assistindo a coisas em inglês não é suficiente para aprender. Temos que identificar e procurar colocar em uso o que vemos e ouvimos nesses programas. Então, selecionei algumas expressões do filme e a primeira parte do exercício é tentar identificar o significado delas.

Continuing the exercise, try now to make sentences, and when I say make sentences, I always advise you to try to make real sentences, so that there's a link to reality and you memorize them easily.

Continuando o exercício, agora tente fazer frases, e quando eu digo fazer frases, sempre aconselho vocês a tentar fazer frases reais, para que haja uma ligação com a realidade e você possa memorizá-las mais facilmente.

COOL TIPS: Say it DIFFERENTLY!!!

Hey guys!!! One thing I always tell my students is that some words are too basic for them. Sometimes, especially using adjectives, we get stuck in the basic words such as big, small, beautiful, good, bad... instead of that, try to use some words that are more beautiful and add a nice touch to your way of speaking!!! Take a look at this list and make great use of it!!!

Oi pessoal!!! Uma coisa que sempre digo a meus alunos é que algumas palavras são básicas demais para eles. Às vezes, especialmente ao usar adjetivos, ficamos presos nas palavras básicas como grande, pequeno, bonito, bom, ruim.... em vez disso, tente usar algumas palavras que são mais bonitas e dão um belo toque à sua forma de falar!!! Dê uma olhada nesta lista e faça ótimo uso dela!!!

This week, one of my students came up with a question: he wanted to know what was the meaning of LOG in that Beatles song "A hard day's night". They say: 

Esta semana, um dos meus alunos surgiu com uma pergunta: ele queria saber qual era o significado de LOG naquela música dos Beatles "A hard day's night". Eles dizem:

LOG is a part of the tree, in Portuguese TRONCO or LENHA. But what's the point here???

LOG é uma parte da árvore, em português TRONCO ou LENHA. Mas o que que tem a ver???

The thing is that SLEEP LIKE A LOG or TOP or even SLEEP LIKE A BABY means to sleep very well, without waking.  

O negócio é que SLEEP LIKE A LOG ou TOP ou mesmo SLEEP LIKE A BABY quer dizer dormir muito bem, sem acordar.

I've been working on many events lately, interpreting, and I'm so happy for that. But at the same time I feel sad I can't find some time to write to you. However, I'll find some time later this week and post something nice and elaborated!!! 

Tenho trabalhado em vários eventos ultimamente, intepretação, e estou muito feliz por isso. Mas ao mesmo tempo fico triste por não achar tempo para escrever para vocês. Entretanto, vou encontrar um tempinho mais para frente desta semana e postar algo legal e elaborado!!!
