IN & NOW: Obama's Inauguration 2013

 Yes!!! Today is President Obama's 2nd Inauguration in Washington D.C. He's kicking off his second term in the Presidency of the United States with lots of optimism and hope even though being seen by a much smaller crowd than in his 1st time, since now he's having only 2 celebrations compared to several back in 2009. He's attending 2 official inaugural balls, his inaugural address and a parade on the streets.

Sim!!! Hoje é a 2a Posse do Presidente Obama em Washington D.C. Ele irá dar início ao seu segundo mandato na Presidência dos Estados Unidos com muito otimismo e esperança mesmo sendo visto por uma multidão muito menor do que em sua primeira vez, visto que agora ele terá somente 2 comemorações em comparação com diversas em 2009. Ele participará de dois bailes oficiais de posse, seu discurso de posse e de um desfile nas ruas.

One of the expected attractions for the celebration is the singer Beyoncè, as well as Kelly Clarkson and James Taylor.

IN & NOW: Elections 2012

Yesterday, the local elections - mayor and city councilors - were held in Brazil and moved the whole population to make a choice and elect their favorite candidate to represent their municipality.

Ontem, as eleições municipais - prefeito e vereadores - ocorreram no Brasil e moveram a população para fazer uma escolha e eleger seu candidato favorito para representar seu município.

In some cities, which is the case of São Paulo, the current mayor can not be re-elected, because he is in the second and final term.  

Em algumas cidades, que é o caso de São Paulo, o prefeito atual não pode ser reeleito porque ele está em seu segundo e último mandato.

Some cities, 50 more precisely, are going to face the run-off elections (October 28th), i.e., the second part of it in which the two most voted candidates, which did not achieve over 50% of votes, are going to be voted again so that people decide who will be the winner.

Algumas cidades, 17 mais precisamente, irão enfrentar as eleições de segundo turno (28 de outubro), ou seja, a segunda parte na qual os dois candidatos mais votados, que não alcançaram mais de 50% dos votos, serão votados novamente para que as pessoas decidam quem será o vencedor.

Parallel to it, the United States Presidential Elections are coming up too. They are going to be held on November 6th, and President Barack Obama, Democratic Party, is running for his second and final term. His major contender is Mitt Romney, Republican Party, former Massachussets Governor.

Paralelamente, as Eleições Presidenciais dos Estados Unidos estão chegando também. Elas ocorrerão no dia 6 de novembro, e o Presidente Barack Obama, Partido Democrata, está concorrendo para seu segundo e último mandato. Seu maior concorrente é Mitt Romney, Partido Republicano, ex-Governador de Massachussets.

In the United States, the voting takes place in a slightly different manner: not alike Brazil which is 100% eletronically using a DRE voting machine, there they have other means of voting too besides the DRE voting machine, which are the optical scan voting machines that read the paper ballots left in the ballot boxes by voters.

Nos Estados Unidos, a votação ocorre de forma um pouco diferente: não como no Brasil que é 100% eletronicamente usando uma urna eletrônica, lá eles possuem outro meio de votação também além da urna eletrônica, que são as máquinas de votação de escaneamento ótico que leem os votos no papel deixados na urnas pelos eleitores. 

Back to Brazil, some cities are already celebrating the victory of their candidates, and the others are looking forward to seeing who will be the winner. Let's wait and see the final result!!!

IN & NOW: Today's Labor Day in the USA

Different from Brazil, today's Labor Day in the United States. 

Diferente do Brasil, hoje é o Dia do Trabalho nos Estados Unidos.
 According to the American government's website, this holiday is celebrated every first Monday in September, which makes more sense than here, since we celebrate the 1st day of May, and it can fall on a Sunday, for example, a day which most of people just rest.

De acordo com o  site  do governo americano, esse feriado é comemorado toda primeira segunda-feira de setembro, que faz mais sentido do que aqui, já que comemoramos no 1º dia de maio, e pode cair em um domingo, por exemplo, um dia que a maioria das pessoas somente descansa.

This day is the creation of the labor movement and it is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

Esse dia é a criação do movimento trabalhista e é dedicado às conquistas sociais e econômicas dos trabalhadores americanos. Constitui um tributo nacional anual às contribuições que os trabalhadores fizeram para a força, prosperidade e bem-estar de seu país.

Another cultural difference besides the date is the celebration behind it. In Brazil we just take some time off and rest on that day, while in the US they celebrate it with parades and events to bring the community together and bless the end of the summer.

Outra diferença cultural além da data é a comemoração por trás dela. No Brasil a gente só tira umas "férias" e descansa nesse dia, enquanto nos Estados Unidos eles comemoram com desfiles e eventos para unir a comunidade e abençoar o final do verão.

And to add a finishing touch, it's just another "excuse" to go on a shopping spree, that is, it's another holiday weekend of things on sale and great bargains you can find on the shops and malls around the country.

E para finalizar, é somente mais uma "desculpa" para se encher de compras, ou seja, é mais um final de semana prolongado de coisas em promoção e ótimas pechinchas que você pode encontrar nas lojas e shoppings em todo o país.
