IN & NOW: It's HALLOWEEN!!!

Everyone celebrates Halloween in the US as a cheering event or just an excuse to go out at night and drink a lot. Here in Brazil, Halloween is also celebrated especially in English schools and some bars. But, what is that??? Where did it come from??? Check out this explanation I found online:

Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain.

Acreditam que teve origem com o antigo festiva Celta de Samhain, em que as pessoas acendiam fogueiras e usavam fantasias para evitar a perambulação de fantasmas. No século XVIII, o Papa Gregory III designou o dia 1 de Novembro como um tempo de honra aos santos e mártires; o feriado, Dia de Todos os Santos, incorporou algumas das tradições de Samhain.

The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats.

A noite anterior era conhecida como Noite de Todos os Santod e depois Halloween. Com o tempo, o Halloween evoluiu e se tornou um evento secular baseado na comunidade, caracterizado por atividades favoráveis para crianças como sair pedir travessuras ou gostosuras. Em vários países do mundo, como os dias ficam mais curtos e as noites mais frias, as pessoas continuam a guiar a temporada de inverno com encontros, fantasias e gostosuras.
