IN AND NOW: Happy Easter!!!

IN & NOW: Good Friday

So tomorrow we've got another holiday to take a day off and rest a little, but do you actually know what we're "celebrating" on that day???
Então amanhã temos outro feriado para tirar um dia de folga e descansar um pouco, mas você sabe na verdade o que estamos "celebrando" nesse dia???

It's called Good Friday, but also known as Holy Friday, Easter Friday, Great Friday, a religious holiday before Easter, and it celebrates the crucifixion of Jesus because they believe that this fact happened on a Friday at that time.

É chamada de Sexta-Feira Santa, mas também conhecida como Sexta-Feira da Paixão, um feriado religioso antes da Páscoa, e comemora a crucificação de Jesus poque acreditam que esse fato ocorreu em uma sexta-feira naquele tempo.

A cultural aspect people have on this holiday is eating meatless meals. In Great Britain people usually make a traditional dish for the date called hot cross buns, a kind of bread with raisins with a cross in the middle.
Um aspecto cultural que as pessoas têm nesse feriado é comer refeições sem carne. Na Grã-Bretanha as pessoas geralmente fazem um prato tradicional para a data chamado "hot cross buns", um tipo de pão com uvas passas com uma cruz no meio.

So enjoy your day off and get ready for Easter!!! =)

Então aproveite seu dia de folga e se prepare para a Páscoa!!! =)

COOL TIPS: Country names

So yesterday I was doing an interpreting job in the booth and everything related to the subject was on the tip of my tongue after studying about it. However, this guy came up with a question to the speaker and he mentioned a country in Portuguese that I almost couldn't remember, Chipre, but luckily (and I actually don't know how so many words we don't use very often pop up from our brain) I said Cyprus [check the pronunciation here clicking on the flag]. Did you know that??? So, I made a list with the countries that get more different when speaking English to help you - and myself - to remember them when it's time to use them! Take a look:

ROUND & ROUND: Top 5 Attractions in CHICAGO - Part I

Chicago is one of my favorite cities in the US, and this year, after the reelection of President Barack Obama, I decided to write a post about it, since its his hometown. But this time, instead of writing my point of view, I asked some friends who lived and live around the city to tell us their favorite places. They are interchange students who had the opportunity to get to know this beautiful city, my cousin Thales and my friend Victoria.
Chicago é uma das minhas cidades favoritas dos EUA, e este ano, após a reeleição do Presidente Barack Obama, decidi escrever um post sobre ela, já que é a terra natal dele. Mas desta vez, em vez de escrever o meu ponto de vista, pedi para alguns amigos que moraram e moram nos arredores da cidade nos contar seus lugares favoritos. Eles são alunos de intercâmbio que tiveram a oportunidade de conhecer essa linda cidade, meu primo Thales e minha amiga Vitória.

Today let's start with Thales and his top 5:

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: British x American English

Guys! Today I'm showing you the differences between American and British English that can be applied every time you have a word with the same model as the ones in the chart. For example in British English we always add the "u" in "or" endings such as "neighbor" x "neighbour", even though the pronunciation is basically the same. Check the other and don't forget that!!!
Pessoal! Hoje estou mostrando a vocês as diferenças entre o inglês americano e britânico que podem ser aplicadas todas as vezes que vocês tiverem um palavra com o mesmo modelo dessas na tabelas. Por exemplo, no inglês britânico sempre adicionamos o "u" nas terminações em "or" como "neighbor" x "neighbour", mesmo que a pronúncia seja praticamente a mesma. Vejam as outras e não se esqueçam disso!!!

EXPRESSION OF THE DAY: Let the cat out of the bag

Monday morning challenge:
Desafio da manhã de segunda:

What does "to let the cat out of the bag" mean???
O que "to let the cat out of the bag" significa???

Guys, this is another idiom, and it is very common, so common that many people make jokes about this literal meaning.
Pessoal, essa é outra expressão idiomática e é muito comum, tão comum que muitas pessoas fazem piadinhas sobre esse significado literal.

But to be accurate and correct, "to let the cat out of the bag" simply means to tell a secret by mistake; reveal a secret or surprise by accident.
Mas para ser preciso e correto, "to let the cat out of the bag" simplesmente significa contar um segredo sem querer, revelar um segredo ou uma surpresa acidentalmente.

For example:
Por exemplo:

We could see Amy knew about her surprise b-day party, probably her BFF let the cat out of the bag.
Deu para perceber que a Amy sabia sobre sua festa de aniversário surpresa, provavelmente sua melhor amiga acabou contando para ela.

He is so slow that I can't tell him my confidential stuff, because he always lets the cat out of the bag!
Ele é tão lerdo que não posso contar para ele minhas coisas confidenciais, porque ele sempre acaba contando

So, once again, don't be fooled by the literal meaning of the idioms!!! Have a great week!!!
Então, mais uma vez, não seja enganado pelo significado literal das expressões idiomáticas!!! Tenha uma ótima semana!!!

We have to be aware of it and be willing to achieve the top step by step, or how interesting would it be reaching the top if it were so easy???? Have a great weekend!!!!
O especialista
em qualquer coisa
foi um dia
um aprendiz.
Pessoal!

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: British x American English

Good morning guys!!!! This is an interesting chart showing the uses of British and American English in several situations such as food, travel, etc, so that you can compare. Remember that it's not wrong saying one or the other, it's just a regional variation, as we have in the Northeast and in the Southeast of Brazil, or better, as we have in Brazil and in Portugal!!!! Enjoy!!!
Bom dia, pessoal!!! Esta é uma tabela interessante mostrando os usos do inglês britânico e americano em diversas situações como comida, viagem, etc., para que você possam comparar. Lembrem-se que não é errado dizer um ou outro, trata-se somente de uma variação regional, da mesma forma que temos no nordeste e no sudeste do Brasil, ou melhor, como temos no Brasil e em Portugal!!! Aproveitem!!!

EXPRESSION OF THE DAY: Jump out of your skin

When you hear or read this expression - JUMP OUT OF YOUR SKIN - what comes to mind??? Would it be like in the picture below in which the snake literally changes its skin???
Quando você ouve ou lê esta expressão - JUMP OUT OF YOUR SKIN - o que vem em mente??? Seria como na foto em que a cobra literalmente troca de pele???

Nooooo... idioms are completely not literal, so we have to find the meaning behind each little word.
Nãoooo... as expressões idiomáticas são completamente não literais, portanto precisamos encontrar o significado por trás de cada palavrinha.

According to the Oxford Idioms Dictionary, this idiom is defined as "Make a quick, sudden movement because something has suddenly frightened you." Take a look at some of the examples:
De acordo com o Dicionário Oxford Idioms, essa expressão idiomática é definida como "Fazer um movimento rápido e repentino porque alguma coisa assustou você de repente". Dê uma olhada em alguns exemplos:

When I heard the explosion, I nearly jumped out of my skin.
Quando ouvi a explosão, quase saí de mim.

She almost jumped out of her skin when somebody banged on the door in the middle of the night.
Ela quase ficou em choque quando alguém bateu à porta no meio da noite.

The sight of a spider made her jump out of her skin.
Avistar uma aranha fez com que ela saísse de si.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: "What's the new"???

Hey guys!!! It's very common to find mistakes in Marketing here in Brazil, when people want to use English to sound cooler but forget to get the translation done by a real translator, or at least to check if the sentence written in English (by a Brazilian) is correct.
Olá pessoal!!! É muito comum encontrar erros de Marketing aqui no Brasil, quando as pessoas querem usar inglês para parecer mais descolados mas se esquecem de pegar a tradução  feita por um tradutor de verdade, ou pelo menos verificar se a frase escrita em inglês (por um brasileiro) está correta.

So the challenge is: What's wrong in this sentence???
Então o desafio é: O que está errado nesta frase???

If you answered the article THE you're right!!! =D
Se você respondeu o artigo THE você está certo!!! =D

We can't say "THE new", because "new" is an adjective and there's no noun after that (which is mandatory in case you use the article before the adjective), so it's not right saying that way. To make it correct, just say "What's new" or "What's the new collection/campaign/outfit/website/etc.", and then it's perfect!!!
Não podemos dizer "THE new", porque "novo" é um adjetivo e não tem nenhum substantivo depois dele (que é obrigatório no caso de uso de artigo antes do adjetivo), então não está certo dizer dessa forma. Para deixar correto, apenas diga "What's new" ou "What's the new colection/campaign/outfit/website/etc." e assim fica perfeito!!! [Qual é a nova coleção/campanha/roupa/site/etc.]

Liked this tip??? If you see something strange too, let me know and I'll be glad to post it here!!! =D
Gostou desta dica??? Se você vir algo estranho também, conte para mim e ficarei feliz em postar aqui!!! =D
